Barbara Weiss 1939 - 2022

Barbara Ruth (Mayer) Weiss, of Boynton Beach passed away on January 12, 2022 at home, surrounded by her family and friends. Barbara put up a strong seven year fight with cancer and is finally at peace resting with her late son, Laurence Weiss.
Born on January 11th, 1939 in Brooklyn, NY she was the daughter of Marcella (Pullman) and Leon Mayer, and sister of the late Martin Mayer of Long Beach, California. Barbara is survived by her husband of 61 years, Howard S. Weiss, whom she adored and shared a great love with.
She was a proud graduate of Erasmus Hall High School and went on to earn her Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate Degree in Education. She began teaching in Rockland County, where she raised her family, and then went on to spend over 30 years teaching kindergarten and working as a science specialist at P.S.86 in the Bronx, NY where she touched and changed countless lives. She loved children and would advocate for them fiercely. She taught with a wonderful group of friends, whom she cherished.
Barbara had a love for the Berkshires, having gone to camp there as a child. She loved everything Manhattan, whether it be on or off Broadway shows, the arts and craft fairs, the museums, zoos, art galleries and restaurants. She and Howard were beautiful ballroom dancers, on their anniversary they would go to the Rainbow Room for dinner and dancing, they were magnificent on the floor together. She was an avid reader and always had a great recommendation for a good book. She loved knitting and often donated newborn hats to hospitals. She and Howard would gather goods to send to strangers who survived disasters. She loved plants and art and fashion. She was a beloved confidante to many, many friends and family. She never criticized or judged, she just stood by you and you knew it.
The greatest pride in her life was her family. She is survived by her son Matthew Weiss and his wife Rebecca of Sharon, MA as well as her daughter-in-law Diane Hettrick, wife of her late son Lawrence Weiss of New City NY. Her greatest joys were her grandchildren Zachary and Julia of Sharon, they were everything to her for 25 years and she was beyond proud of their achievements. She is also survived by her sister in-law Marilyn Mayer of Long Beach, California, her three nieces and nephew whom she adored and Diane Hettrick’s children Sammy and Tommy and their children.
She was a resilient, smart, strikingly beautiful woman who will be remembered for her love, her smile, and strong character.
A graveside funeral will be held on Monday, January 17th, 2022 at 11 am at Cedar Park Cemetery in Paramus Park, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital at https://www.stjude.org
