Remembering an extraordinary father, son, uncle and teacher, an iconoclast who always carved his own path.
Born in Manhattan Nov. 4, 1924 as Nathan Schlossberg, he changed his last name to Sloan in the 1940s following his military service in the army during World War II.
After attending NYU – where he met his wife Harriet and a group of lifelong friends – Nat had a brief stint in the business world before going into teaching, where he found his calling.
He started in Yonkers but then moved onto Scarsdale where he became a legend teaching junior high school science for more than 30 years, but also inspiring hundreds of students to live their best lives.
After retiring in the mid-1980s he spent time at the Heritage Hills community in Somers, pursuing his passion for tennis, dancing and crafting sculptures.
He is survived by his daughter Karen Sloan and daughter-in-law Karen Connelly, nieces Mindy and Shari and Stacy, and countless students who remember him so clearly in and out of the classroom.
