It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Lawrence (Larry) Martin Mayer, who died peacefully at the age of 85 on April 29, 2025.
Born in New York City, Larry lived a life marked by intellectual curiosity, quiet strength, and dedication to his family, friends, colleagues and community. Larry attended Stuyvesant High School and the City College of New York, and earned a Master in Teaching from Wesleyan University. His distinguished career as an educator spanned more than 47 years. He began teaching Social Studies and History at Ardsley High School and rose to a variety of faculty and administrative leadership positions at high schools throughout the tri-state area including proudly serving as Principal of Ardsley High School. He demonstrated his commitment to his students through countless endeavors including coaching the men’s and women’s tennis teams, leading numerous educational trips for high school students (including a 1989 trip to the former Soviet Union), and founding the Choice alternative school program, a groundbreaking initiative that combined traditional classroom instruction with experience based learning for a cohort of high school students.
As a lifelong sports fan and avid reader, his retirement in Delaware was spent following the NY sports teams of his youth, volunteering at the library, and adopting several rescued Akitas. Larry and his wife Barbara also became owners of Mob Boss, a “Cinderella story” of a horse who brought them both great joy when he raced (and won!).
As a family man, teacher, mentor, and friend, he left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He is survived by his beloved wife Barbara, children Russell, Gail, Deborah, Andrea, and Trisha, and grandchildren Harry, Jack, Logan, and Charlotte. He will be greatly missed, remembered with love and admiration, and his legacy will live on in the lives of those he touched.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Fisher House Foundation or the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
