Sylvia Elbaz was born Sylvia Jeanne Burnett on May 13, 1926 to Arthur and Sallie Burnett. On June 11, 2025, she passed away peacefully and comfortably at 99 years of age. She was a loving mother to Brian of Yonkers, NY, and Philip of Beaver, PA. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Julian, sister Miriam and brother Harvey. In addition to her sons, she leaves behind a daughter-in-law Clare of Pittsburgh, niece Abby and nephew, Adam of Ft. Lauderdale, nephews David of Rockwall, TX, nephew Paul of Las Vegas, cousin Anita of Durham, NC, and many dear friends from all walks of life.
She married Julian in 1959, moved to Virginia in 1961, returned to New York in 1967, and lived her final two years in Pennsylvania.
She graduated from Erasmus Hall High School in 1943, earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Brooklyn College, followed by a Master’s Degree in Music Education from Brooklyn College and a Master’s Degree in Nutrition Education from University of Bridgeport. She devoted herself to lifelong learning in the fields of health and holistic medicine, by continuing to attend and participate in seminars, conferences, and webinars throughout her life.
Her professional career began as an Inspector for the New York City Department of Health. She worked as a school teacher in Virginia and then in New York, teaching music and science for 19 years. Upon retiring from the New York City Board of Education, she began her next career as a holistic health care provider, licensed nutritional consultant and dietician, which she continued for 30 years, helping clients achieve their health goals. Many of her clients became lifelong friends. She gave presentations and seminars and appeared as a guest on Gary Null’s radio show to discuss nutrition.
In 1992, she wrote, produced, and starred in “Health’s Kitchen,” a healthy cooking television show, which aired on BronxNet and Manhattan Neighborhood Network. Her show won the 18th Annual Hometown Video Festival Award in 1995, a project of the Alliance For Coumminty Media. Her show’s entry was one of 1,751 entries submitted nationwide.
