Goldie Zamick Scher, 94, of NEW YORK, passed away on March 27, 2023 af-ter a long illness.
Goldie was born in Winnipeg, Canada to David and Sheva Zamick. After grad-uating Talmud Torah Hebrew School, she participated in a study program in Israel before moving to New York City at 16 to study Jewish theology. There she met Isadore Nahmias of Indianapolis, who she went on to marry and with whom she had son Howard. Sometime after Isadore’s untimely death, she met Charles Scher, who she married and with whom she had daughter Penina. Goldie placed great value on academic achievement for herself and others and studied for many years at night to obtain her Ed.D. from Yeshiva Universi-ty in 1983. This was done in parallel to her “day job” as reading specialist at Lee Avenue School in Hicksville, Long Island. She truly loved shaping young lives and did so with great warmth and engagement. She was immensely proud of her offspring, proudly referring to herself as the consummate Jewish mother, loved reading, the theater, working out, and perhaps most of all, her activities as a senior auditor at Hunter College. A true-blue New Yorker, she will be remembered for her wit, her own unique brand of glamor, her gener-osity, and her personal and intellectual curiosity. Goldie was devoted to sus-taining Jewish culture and committed to her heritage. She was an enthusiastic and knowledgeable traveler, covering routes from northern Africa to Israel to Asia to Europe. Her absence is already profoundly felt, and we will miss her greatly. Goldie was predeceased by Isadore Nahmias, Charles Scher, sister Claire (Jack) Mandel, and brother-in-law Stanley (Susan) Scher. She is survived by her two children, Dr. Howard Scher (Deborah Lafer) and Penina Scher; her grandchildren Jeremy (Jedediah Bila), Isabel, and Daniel (Sarah Mitrano) Scher; along with great-grandson Hartley Bila-Scher; brother Dr. Larry (Mona) Zamick; nephews and nieces David, Marty (Linda), Len (Tatiana), and Neil (Sandy Perlman) Mandel; Lynn Zamick; William, Peter (Kim Tilley), Alison (An-drew Halper) Scher; and sister-in-law Sheila Scher. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to Hunter College.
