It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the passing of Chaim Harry Gutter. He is survived by his daughters, Karen Fine (Jeffrey) and Suzanne Gilboa (Yoram); grandchildren, Joshua Fine, Zachary Fine, Benjamin Gilboa and Alexandra Gilboa; his sister, Lucille Sonber; and his companion, Marcia Dahan. He was predeceased by his wife, Natalie Gutter; his brother-in-law, Allen Sonber; and his parents, Solomon and Esther Gutter.
Harry was born in Bochnia, Poland in 1938, and together with his older sister, Lucille, bravely survived the Holocaust despite being separated from their parents for nearly 3 years. Remarkably, Harry and Lucille were reunited with their parents in Germany after WWII and immigrated to New York City in March 1949. Harry graduated from Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, NY where he was an All American soccer player. Following high school, he served in the US Army for six months, and then was a reservist for several years to follow. He attended City College, and then Columbia University School of Social Work. Harry had a forty-year career as a social worker for the City of New York, working primarily with the elderly and post-institutionalized populations. He married Natalie in 1965, whom he met when she was considering becoming a social worker; she rather quickly realized that it was not the career for her and switched to teaching.
When his beloved Natalie died in 2008 after a two-year battle with breast cancer, Harry was devastated. Marcia helped Harry move forward after heartbreak and find happiness the last 17 years of his life.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those who wish to make a donation consider donating to Chevra Hatzalah, volunteer ambulance service (https://hatzalah.org/) or the organization of their choice.
May the memory of the righteous be forever a blessing.
