In the early morning of February 29, 2020, Dr. Howard Stanley Schwartz of Bronx, NY passed away at 88, loved by family, friends, and colleagues alike. Howard leaves a multifaceted legacy, as an accomplished physician and most importantly, a devoted family man: beloved husband of his late wife, Sarah, devoted brother to Joan and the late Jerome Jakubovitz and to the late Doris and Rolf Bergman; Loving father of Daniel (Randi Schwartz), the late Robert (Mei Schwartz), and Beth (The late Sam Shafizadeh); cherished grandfather to Julia and Sofia Shafizadeh, Michael Schwartz and Simone and Brooke Schwartz. Beloved Uncle, cousin and friend.
Born May 16, 1931, Howard grew up with two older sisters in the Bronx, NY, and attended DeWitt Clinton High School. He went on to Columbia College, where he rowed, played football, and studied medicine, graduating in 1952. After continuing his studies at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, he earned his MD in 1956, marking the start of a long and accomplished career in medicine.
Passionate in the fields of endocrinology and cancer medicine, Howard conducted research at the National Institutes of Health, and then served his residency at Montefiore Hospital. Quickly excelling in his class, Howard served as Chief Resident at Montefiore from 1961-1962, before also starting his private practice in the Bronx. Deeply concerned with improving patient safety and comfort, he was a prolific lecturer and writer on the matter, as well as a patient safety consultant for many years. Always esteemed in his field, Howard also held professorships at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the New York Medical College.
Howard, Howie, Dad, Grandpa, Grampy, Poppy you are sorely missed, but forever a source of comfort, inspiration, and love. Of the many hats you wore, you excelled in all of them, and have changed the lives you touched for the better.

July 18, 2020 at 7:28 amI am deeply sad to learn of your father’s passing.
Your father saved my life In 1967 when I was 17 years old. I live in MI and my doctors didn’t know how to help me. Your dad instructed them remotely what to do everyday for the 4 months of my hospitalization. My parents ultimately discharged me and flew me to NY to Montefiore hospital to be under your fathers direct care. Your dad was more than the typical doctor who treats an illness. He saw a sick high schooler and cared enough to help me emotionally and socially to get me through this time. I cannot speak enough to his brilliance and kindness. You may recall your parents receiving flowers on Rosh Hashana for many years from a patient’s family when you were young. Those were from us.
I will never forget your father. I look at my daughter and her 11 month old baby and I know if not for your dad, none of us would be here. “ He who saves a life is as if he saved a whole world.” This world lost a very great man.
My deepest condolences.
