Walter Futterweit 1931 - 2021

Dr. W. Futterweit passed away on February 2, 2021 at his home after a long illness. Dr. Futterweit was born in Vienna, Austria on Sept 8, 1931. He, his parents Regina and Henry, along with his sister Tilly escaped to America in 1939 after being in a holding camp for some time. They settled amongst family in Brooklyn and Walter became a student at Mesifta Chaim Berlin. He continued his education at N.Y.U. and graduated from N.Y.U. Medical School in June, 1957. He did an internship at Beth Israel Hospital in Manhattan, a residency at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx, and a one year fellowship at the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology in Mass, doing research on techniques of extracting male hormones in urine on a gas chromatic machine.
In 1963, he became an attending physician at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, and was promoted to full Professor of Medicine and Endocrinology. He was Assistant Chief of the Endocrine Clinic, as well as the Quality Assurance Committee. He was an active member of the Academy of Endocrinology and the Androgen Excess Society. His attendance at Mt. Sinai, his clinical practice, his lectures around the world spanned a period of 55 years.
Dr. Futterweit’s research and clinical treatment of cystic ovaries have provided innovative methods of treatment for this syndrome, affording thousands of women the opportunity to live healthier and more productive lives. In 1983, he published the first medical book on PCOS, which has become the guideline for future reference. He has been fondly name “The Father of PCOS”.
Dr. Futterweit is survived by his wife Gloria of 63 years, 3 children Lorelle, Stephen and Debra and four grandchildren
